Living It, Breathing It

May 23rd, 2008

Okay, I know I have not posted in almost 2 weeks. But finally I am here to update on all the things that have been going on. I have decided on a Promo Piece that I will send out to prospective clients. It is going to be a small book with new creature illustrations. I also want it to demonstrate my sequential character development and visual story telling skills. The Promo piece will resemble a pocket sized children’s picture book, with a small query letter and contact information on the first page. I might try some unconventional methods of distributing this book to get it in front of my targeted clients. Unlike postcards, this small book will be slightly more unique from the traditional direct mail approach illustrators normally take. I will post the new promo piece as soon as I am finished with it.

Recently I have joined a few online networking groups.

Biznik.com is an online networking place for professionals. Featuring articles on good marketing and business advice as well as some good business discussions. It is not an art community. Instead it is a way for professionals from all over the business spectrum to network. It’s a good idea to network with non-artists as well.

Linkedin.com is another online network site that I have been hearing about for a while, so I finally decided to try it out. It is a way to connect with other people you know in the industry. You could find friends, colleagues and others you have met once but have not kept in touch with.

Artbistro.com Once again I have joined another art community. You get your own profile, portfolio, and ability to network with friends. Yet another social networking site with group discussions, forums and networking opportunities.

Now for my sales:

I have recently sold another Dragon Cross Print on Etsy

    Hi Diana,

It’s difficult to summarize online services like LinkedIn and Biznik into a single paragraph. You did a great job! Here’s my take on them: LinkedIn is a tool that helps job-seekers manage their contacts; Biznik is a community that helps small business owners build relationships.

More simply: If both services were people, LinkedIn would be dressed in a suit; Biznik would be wearing blue jeans and a paint-splattered sweat shirt. They both look hot, just quite different!

(now, where’s that can of paint…)
